Small Difference, Real Impact

A leg length difference of just a few millimeters can lead to pain over time as your body works harder to balance and distribute weight evenly. Depending on the cause, the right correction might be as simple as a shoe insert to help even out your stride and support balanced force absorption while walking or running.

Not all leg length differences are the same. A leg length imbalance (anisomelia) can come from a torqued pelvis, from a true anatomical difference — a shortened tibia, femur, or both — or from an over-pronated foot, which a custom orthotic can often address directly. Telling these apart matters, because the right treatment is different for each, and it isn’t always obvious without a trained assessment. Sometimes a patient has a combination of a torqued pelvis and a genuine anatomical difference at the same time.

Because leg length differences can contribute to chronic issues elsewhere in the body — including recurring trigger points, low back pain, hip or knee discomfort, and headaches — getting an accurate diagnosis is the first step toward lasting relief.
