Seeing What an MRI Can’t

An MRI is an impressive tool, but it captures a still image — it can’t show what’s happening in your muscles while you actually move. DynaROM uses real-time motion testing to document pain as it happens, digitally quantifying range of motion and measuring what your muscles are doing while contracting and relaxing, down to the microvolt.

This matters because some muscle-related injuries simply don’t show up on a traditional MRI. The surface electromyography data gathered during a DynaROM scan can be compared against normal, pain-free individuals — abnormal readings can point to an injury that static imaging missed entirely.

Whiplash injuries from car accidents are one of the clearest examples of where this test helps. Whiplash can be genuinely difficult to see on an MRI, and finding the real source of pain is essential to building an effective treatment plan.

During testing, you’ll perform three repetitions of six simple movements — flexion, extension, and left and right lateral flexion and rotation — each set lasting about 30 seconds. The system measures both muscle guarding and range of motion. If you’ve shown “normal” range of motion on a standard exam but are still in pain, this test is often where we find the missing piece.
